Our Story
Shopping for groceries can be a hassle, labels that have ingredients that you can’t pronounce, other ingredients that read “natural” flavors, and a small percentage of the actual ingredient, such as grape juice. Have you ever wondered about the journey that your grocery items take before you bring them home to your table? Like most people, I never gave it a second thought.
At the time, I was in grocery retail, we lived in Missouri, where I was raised on a cattle farm as a kid. Growing up on that farm, I knew where our food came from, our garden, milk was from the goats or the cows, and we drank it raw, unfiltered, and unpasteurized.
We didn’t eat fast food; all the meals were home-cooked and were stored either by home canning, outdoor dehydration, or meat from the farm. We made our butter, cheeses, bread, jellies, jams, and pickled items. Dissatisfied with today’s processes that are used to store food, I left the grocery industry.
We were visiting my husband’s parents back in June of 2019. We had some decisions to make once we returned home to Missouri. His parents were getting older, and he had been living in Missouri with me for the past 18 years.
It was time for us to make the move to Georgia, where he would have time to spend with his parents. I never thought I would go back to farming; I left as a kid, vowing to never return to the hard physical labor and the uncertainty of making sure we wouldn’t lose the farm. We were looking for a place to rent while we found a home we wanted; the farm came up in a discussion between my husband and one of his friends. I saw it on video and talked with the owner about our plans. In the end, we bought the farm, and the concept of SOOSLO Farms was born!
